THE MIRACLE FRUIT PROJECT 2007
Members of CFGC have been growing Miracle Fruit for over six years and distributing the fruit to persons undergoing chemotherapy to help improve the taste of food for these persons. Patients undergoing chemotherapy may experience a metallic taste when eating. Some people have benefited from the “miracle” effect when consuming Miracle Fruit berries prior to consuming food. The berries can be capable of overcoming the unpleasant sour and metallic flavors experienced, and work best if followed by a sweet food the person likes, for example “peaches”. The success of the past uses of this berry has lead a team of the CFGC board members to develop the Miracle Fruit Project.
Utilizing our experience, board members plan to design and plant Miracle Fruit gardens at agriculturally appropriate host locations within the membership of the CFGC. The host gardener will be trained in the simple care of these plants that are well adapted to growing in Collier County. The host gardener will maintain the plants with organic practices, and harvest fruit for the CFGC to distribute.
CFGC will supply host gardeners with a garden designed into their existing landscape including plants, information, aid in establishment of miracle fruit plants and on going advice on care of the miracle garden. The Host Gardener will donate space and care for the plants. The harvested ripe fruit will be donated back to the administrators of CFGC to distribute free of charge. The Miracle Garden team will be picking sites amongst the CFGC based on willingness to participate, expected long term continuation with the project, and correct environmental conditions to produce Miracle Fruit. CFGC plans to distribute the berries to individuals who may benefit from them, free of charge primarily within our community, but on an as available basis to whoever may be willing to try them.
The gardens can begin producing within one year, but will take up to seven years to reach full potential, and can remain productive for decades. CFGC plans to promote the benefits of these plants as a way to reach out to the community. The club will also promote it as a way for anyone with a yard or lanai to give back to the community.
